Square feet is the easy half. The half that costs you money is everything under and between the tile — bags of thinset for a 1/2" notch, pounds of grout for a 1/8" joint on 12x24, sheets of backer board, and whether that shower wants liquid membrane or sheet.

Enter an 8 x 10 floor in 12x24 herringbone and you get: 7 boxes. Thinset 3 bags at a 1/2" notch, including the back-butter large format needs. Grout 7.9 lb. Backer 6 sheets with 180 screws. That is the estimate — not a number you then turn into one.

Tile waste is not a flat 10%. Straight lay is 10%, diagonal 15%, herringbone 18% — and the square footage AND the box count re-derive the moment you switch. Eight patterns, each with the reason behind its number.
