VV-ECMO Teaching Simulators is an interactive, offline educational tool for learning the physiology of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) at the bedside.
Designed for medical students, residents, ICU nurses, perfusionists and educators, it turns abstract ECMO concepts into a hands-on, simulated patient you can adjust and observe in real time. Every control you move updates the monitor, the blood gas and the circuit together — so you see the physiological consequence immediately.
TWO SIMULATORS IN ONE APP
• VV-ECMO Bedside Trainer — a Spectrum Medical-style synchronized dashboard.
Explore the extracorporeal parameter bank, post-membrane PO₂/PCO₂ computed by the Dalton + nitrogen-anchor method, oxygen delivery vs consumption (DO₂/VO₂), a live patient monitor, a blood gas analyzer, and a step-by-step clinical simulation.
• VV-ECMO Clinical Trainer — a full bedside workstation.
A Getinge-style ECMO console (RPM to flow, gas blender, oxygenator pressures), a Hamilton-C6-style pressure-control ventilator with mechanical power (VILI risk), a DO₂/VO₂ and acid–base engine, five clinical scenarios (Normal, Recirculation, Hypoxia, High Cardiac Output, Membrane Thrombosis) and a scored Challenge mode.
KEY FEATURES
• Real-time bedside monitor with live ECG, arterial line, pleth, CVP, respiration and capnography waveforms.
• ECMO console: pump speed (RPM) to flow, gas blender (FiO₂ + sweep), pre/post-oxygenator pressures and membrane ΔP.
• Steady-state physiology engine: oxygen delivery and consumption, acid–base, recirculation, membrane function.
• Blood Gas Analyzer with colour-coded abnormal values.
• Pressure-control ventilator with mechanical power and lung-protective targets.
• Challenge mode: read the patient, make a diagnosis, choose treatments, and get scored with teaching feedback.
• Works fully offline — no account, no internet, no data collection.
HOW IT HELPS LEARNING
Instead of memorising numbers, learners manipulate the circuit and the patient and immediately see the consequences — why recirculation raises pre-oxygenator saturation, how a high native cardiac output dilutes ECMO support, when a rising membrane ΔP signals oxygenator failure, and how to keep ventilation lung-protective. The single most useful habit it teaches is to read the DO₂/VO₂ ratio together with lactate, rather than reacting to saturation alone.
IMPORTANT — EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY
This application is a simplified teaching model of ECMO physiology. It is NOT a medical device and must NOT be used for clinical decisions, diagnosis, treatment, or patient care. Always rely on validated clinical judgement, institutional protocols and device manuals.
