About this app

Almanac is not a weather app.

Each day it looks at the sky above you, finds a passage of public-domain literature written about that same weather, and tells you how long ago someone wrote it.

"163 years ago, someone watched this rain."

That distance is the whole point. The weather outside your window is not new. Thoreau wrote about this rain in 1854. Kate Chopin wrote about this wind in 1899. Almanac just sets the two side by side.

HOW IT WORKS
Almanac reads the weather where you are, sorts it into one of eight kinds of sky, and chooses a passage to match — a different one in the morning, in daylight, and after dark. Once chosen, it is fixed for that stretch of the day, so the widget and the app always show you the same words.

WHAT IS INSIDE
· 428 passages, chosen by hand
· 27 authors across 32 books, written between 1847 and 1925
· Every one in the public domain, from Project Gutenberg
· Nothing generated. Each passage names its author, its book and its year, so you can go and read the rest.

The day's passage on your home screen, set in the same typeface as the app.

YOUR OWN ARCHIVE
Pages you have read stay with you. Swipe to the right to turn back through them, the way you would page backwards through a book.

QUIET BY DESIGN
· No account, no sign-in, no email address
· No ads, no advertising identifiers, no behavioural tracking
· Passages you have already opened stay readable offline
· Your location is rounded to about 1.1 km before it is stored or sent — the weather does not change over a city block
