About this app

Dot Languages is a complete Chinese learning app: lessons carefully written and crafted by humans, advanced exercises powered by AI — all built around a structured curriculum aligned to HSK 3.0 (2021 and 2025) and TOCFL 2.0 (2023), with personalised practice.

Learn at your own pace through a dynamic HSK-aligned learning path with 11,000+ lessons covering vocabulary, grammar, and reading. Read new articles daily, refreshed for every HSK level, and look up any word in a comprehensive Chinese-English dictionary with character components.

Practice that adapts to you: spaced repetition for vocabulary retention, animated stroke-order character writing, speech recognition for pronunciation, multiple choice, matching, sentence arrangement, flash cards, and AI-evaluated open-ended questions.

Stay motivated with awards, streaks, learning milestones, leaderboards, and social profiles. Track your performance with weekly progress charts.

Bring your own content — add private articles from any source and generate study material from text you paste in.

More features: family plans, teacher classroom tools, grammar with sentence-structure analysis, and variable-speed audio narration of articles.

If you don't mind training an AI, this is probably the best free integrated 3/4-aspect (speaking practice is paid only) HSK 3.0 app around. No ads. imho, much better than the free apps that sell your information, or the paid apps that have hard paywalls and ask for hundreds of dollars a year. I haven't tried paid subscription yet, but from the "trial feature" monthly tokens, it seems like this is an app that is fair to both its free and paid subscribers, and would absolutely be worth it.

Thank you so much, Pati! 😊 We’re really happy to hear that you find the app fair, useful, and accessible. We want to support free learners while making paid features worthwhile without hard paywalls or ads. Your thoughtful review means a lot to us!

Disappointing downfall of a once great learning tool. I used Dot in beta. It did things no other Chinese app did. It challenged you with real life texts, drilled you on basic vocabulary, and forced you to really learn characters rather than vaguely pattern matching. It was a great complement to HSK-based apps, spurring achievement and progress. The app as it exists now has been watered down to take away the challenging parts so there is no real learning progress, and it offers nothing unique.

Thank you for being with us since beta! It is true we have come far since the early basic vocabulary days of Dot. The most popular request has long been that we expand beyond that, which is what we have done to become a comprehensive learning solution. If you only want basic vocabulary, you can always continue to configure this in settings

It's really a shame that the Google Play store messed with this app and you guys had to remake it, because it makes it seem like this app is less popular than it is! I love this app, it has quite good features for being free, and it's really been helping me learn to read Mandarin better, thank you so much! My only suggestions are that I wish the writing practice was free, and also some of the English translations aren't very accurate.

Hi, thank you for your kind words and feedback. We offer many features for free and keep the app ad-free thanks to our amazing subscribers, and we’ll keep adding features for both free and paid users. Regarding English translations, please report any inaccuracies in the app so we can fix them quickly. Thanks for your support and happy learning! 😊
