Partograph (or partogram) is a composite, graphical chart of key data (maternal and/or fetal) during labor entered on a paper form. It used for monitoring progress of labor. The first graphical plot of labor (the cervicograph) was developed by Dr. Emmanuel Friedman in 1954. Later, in 1972, Dr. R.H. Philpott and W.M. Castle built upon his work to develop the first complete clinical partograph by adding the "alert" and "action" lines. Later the World Health Organization (WHO) refined the tool into a composite global standard for monitoring the safety of both mother and fetus during active labor. The partograph is designed to be used at any level of care. A digital partograph is an electronic, app-based version of the traditional paper partograph. Digital partograph automates data plotting. Its central feature is a graph used to record the progress of cervical dilation, as determined by vaginal examination.
