About this app

Sight Buddy is a free, open-source vision assistant for people who are blind or have low vision. Point your phone and it tells you what's there — no account, no subscription, and nothing sent anywhere unless you choose it.

WHAT RUNS ON YOUR PHONE (always, no setup needed)
• Discover Objects — camera scans your surroundings for people, obstacles, and everyday items
• Find Objects — say what you're looking for and get guided toward it, matched on-device
• Text Capture — point at a page, label, or sign and hear it read aloud
• Colour and light detection
• Memories — save a chat and read it again later; saved chats stay on your phone

AI THAT RUNS ON YOUR PHONE (optional download)
Download the AI model once and Sight Buddy answers on the device itself. No key, no account, no internet connection, and nothing sent to anyone:
• Image Chat — ask questions about what the camera sees
• Text Chat — ask questions about text you've scanned
• Smarter Find Objects — Help you to find items that are included in the Find objects list

The model is a large download, and needs a reasonably powerful phone, so it isn't right for every device. You don't have to work that out yourself: the app checks your phone and recommends the models it can run, and the AI model stays available in Advanced settings either way. Offline speech recognition is a separate, much smaller download (English language only).

OPTIONAL: BRING YOUR OWN OPENAI KEY
Add your own API key in Advanced settings. Your key stays encrypted on your device. Requests go straight from your phone to OpenAI — never through us, and you're billed only by OpenAI, only for what you use.
The key slot is empty when you install the app, and nothing is sent to OpenAI unless you add a key yourself.

Sight Buddy is free software, open source under the MIT licence. Inspect it, fork it, improve it.

Currently available in English and Finnish.

A NOTE ON SAFETY
Sight Buddy is an assistive tool, not a substitute for careful judgement. Don't rely on it as your only way to detect hazards or navigate dangerous situations. AI can make mistakes.

What’s new

On-device AI: download a model from Settings and Sight Buddy describes pictures and answers questions on the phone itself — no account, no API key, no internet needed.

TalkBack: buttons and settings read cleanly, Back comes first on every screen, and Sight Buddy's own messages now appear in the chat, so you can read back what it said.

Also new: save a chat to Memories.
