About this app

WhatsVegan helps you find vegan products while shopping, by scanning the product ingredient lists and informing you whether something is vegan or not.

It's pretty simple - you take a photo of a product ingredient list, and we mark the ingredients based on their source, which is plant based or animal based. We also provide a general vegan rating based on all ingredients in a given product. Regardless of whether you're vegan or vegeterian, our food scanner is the best tool to find out which ingredients are suitable for you.

We're different from other food scanners - they scan barcodes, and we scan ingredients directly, which solves the problem of missing products.

Our food scanner is useful not only for seasoned vegans, but also for people gradually cutting out animal products from their diet, people with dietary restrictions, or for people on vegetarian diet. WhatsVegan, just like HappyCow or Barnivore, is a must-have for everyone trying to reduce animal suffering.

WhatsVegan is your personal shopping assistant. You snap a pic of product ingredients list, and we find the ones that are not vegan. We mark ingredients based on their origin, using rectangles with different colors. Green is vegan, red is not vegan, and orange is possibly vegan - it can come from either animal or plant sources. Based on these marks, we give the whole product a rating based on the origin of the ingredients we find.

Ratings and reviews

It's not actually made for Android. Some of the features they offer, such as family sharing, are iOS only even though they appear advertised on the Android version. The ingredient scanning and search work fine but when something scans as "Potentially vegan" it doesn't say why that is, so I end up having to google anyway. And that happens almost always. I give 2 stars because the idea is great, but it feels like an abandoned, unfinished project. iOS version might be better. Real disappointment.

I think it would make more sense to make it so that you have to pay for the app in the app store, otherwise the price comes as a shock when you think you're getting a free app. There is a website online that does the same thing for free. I have to say I don't understand why an ingredient checker is a premium, subscription-based feature when there are various places online you can get the exact same product for free. The convenience of having it in an app isn't worth £30 for me.

Misleading information - the app info on here says "To access paid features, consider purchasing WhatsVegan Premium for $3.99/month or $29.99/year" which implies there are features you can access for free but there aren't. Also the app then says they offer a free trial for people to try it out before committing but I couldn't see any way of accessing this.
