The complex of dosimeter and Android-smartphone with the app GeigerCounter allows you to quickly and accurately assess the level of radiation in open areas and in the rooms.
The application allows continuous measuring the count rate (in counts per minute, CPM) and determines the average, minimum and maximum values of the counting rate. To stabilize the readings used an algorithm for calculating a moving average with a window size of 15 minutes.
Also, the application determines the geographical coordinates of the smartphone.

Measurement protocol is saved in a file in the folder /GeigerCounter on the SD-card smartphone.

We have searched for an application that uses the phone's camera to detect radiation and that protects the user continuously. After downloading all the applications we could find, as of May 2014, it was clear that such an application wasn't available. While some applications were able to detect high levels of radiation, most were unable to effectively resolve smaller radiation fields from background radiation levels. None of the applications were suitable for continuous monitoring as the user went about their normal routine; all applications had to be running in the foreground with the screen on to operate.
So, we decided to write our own app, and GammaGuard is the result!
Our GammaGuard Android application can run continuously in the background and will alarm if you are in an area with high radiation levels.
The current radiation level is displayed in a widget, making this information available to the user without having to re-open the app.
GammaGuard employs your cellphone's camera to detect ionizing radiation. To use, simply cover your camera lens and start the application!
To reduce background noise, GammaGuard uses an advanced algorithm that identifies noise events and excludes them from the analysis.
What to Expect:
GammaGuard reads the brightness of the camera's pixels and compares that value to a threshold. When radiation interacts with the camera, some pixels will be bright, even when the camera is covered. To discern light sources from radiation sources, no light must be allowed to enter the camera while GammaGuard is measuring. The easiest way to keep the camera dark is with a couple of strips of electrical tape. We will also sell protective cases with built-in shutters for the most popular phone models, starting in the spring of 2015.
The sensitivity of any radiation detector is related to its volume. The solid state cameras in phones are quite small. Consequently, at background radiation levels, gamma rays will interact with the camera infrequently. All radiation detector apps that use the phone's camera are subject to this limitation. Any app that claims to be able to detect the radiation from the potassium in a banana is probably fake.
Depending on where you live, the size of your phone's camera, how many frames per second are analyzed, etc., you can expect anywhere from a few counts per hour, at background, to a few hours between counts. Every day objects, such as radium dial watches or thoriated TIG welding rods emit radiation fields 10 to 100 times background. When measuring these objects, one can expect a count every few seconds or minutes. Similarly, the radiation level in an air plane at 30,000 feet is around 30 times background. GammaGuard can easily detect these radiation fields.
While the low sensitivity of camera based radiation detectors is a limitation when measuring low levels of radiation, it is a huge advantage for protecting the user from high radiation levels. Many expensive and sensitive radiation detectors will saturate and become useless in very high radiation fields. Over exposures have occurred while using these detectors because workers responding to radiation incidents were given a false sense of security. Camera based radiation detectors do not saturate in high radiation fields, making them ideal for use by First Responders.
GammaGuard performs a lot of calculations. As a result, the buttons can be somewhat sluggish. Please be patient! The idea of GammaGuard is that you set it up once and then let it run continuously in the background without having to interact with it.

Disclaimer: The type of radiation picked up by the camera can be dangerous/detrimental to the user's health as well as cause damage to the device.
Its NOT a JOKE! The App is using the camera sensor to detect radiation, like a geiger mueller counter, of course with a smaller area. We tested several mobile phones at the Helmholtz research facility in Munich, using a professional radiation device in the range of 2-10 µGy/h till 1-10 Gy/h (CS137 and CO60). The CMOS sensors can detect primary gamma radiation and some higher beta radiation (depends on the shieldings in the mobile phone). Typically not going into saturation as most GM tubes. See FAQ on our homepage for what you can measure and how.

Attention: The counts per minute (CPM) for the background noise should be low (increase the noise setting if not). This is camera noise not radiation noise basically. If the radiation increases then also counts from the radiation adds to the CPM values (see our tables for the sensitivity). If you have a phone with 200 CPM for 100 uGy/h then the background noise produces for 100 nGy/h only 0.1 CPM. That means in 10 minutes ONE counts in 100 minute TEN counts adding to the CPM0 (noise of sensor). So you need a LONG time to measure for low radiation values on this device. Attention: AM241 (smoke detectors) only emit ALPHA rays, they get stuck in the plastic of the phones. H3 (tritium - watches etc) are beta emitters with 45 keV. They also get stuck quickly, mainly already in the watches. K40 (KCL for example contains 16 Bq/g) are beta emitters with small amount of gamma (due to positron collisions)- you need also a long integration time to measure them. Same for TH rods (2% Thorium) mainly alpha rays, then beta and some gamma. Very small diameter ! You need a large area to detect them (best GM with mica windows). The CMOS sensor of the camera only has 2mmx2mm.
Good objects are TH lenses (up to 30% TH232), pitchblend (gamma of decay products) and CS137 for checking food which might be contaminated (if larger 1 uSv/h). Don't experiment with radiation sources !!!

Automatic monitoring will use ~1% of your battery, but could warn you of radiation even when not using the app.
A 10 to 20-minute initialization is required before you use the application for the first time. We know this step slows you down, but it really is necessary to get the best results. Please perform this step in a place you know is likely to be free of excessive radioactivity, with your device cool and unplugged.
For best results make sure no light is getting into the camera when you run the GammaPix app. Putting the phone in your pocket or covering it with a book works well.
A reading takes about 3 to 5 minutes if there's no danger. Dangerous levels will be reported sooner.
The GammaPix App will not work on some phone models because the camera optimization at low light levels gives "bright" pictures.
Not all phone models have been calibrated. We'll use your readings to provide a calibration for your model. The more you take, the sooner we'll have a calibration.

The most important part for the detection of the radioactivity is the camera chip of the smartphone. During the measument absolutely no incident light is allowed for the camera. Therefore the camera lens must be sealed e.g. by a black insulating tape. Of course you can keep the lens shut by your finger, but sometimes a little light shines through the fingers. In this case use at least additionally a cloth to shut the lens.
First calibrate the radioactivity-meter for your smartphone-hardware:
a) Fix the zero point where no radioactivity is caught by the smartphone. The zero point must be fixed at the lowest temperature of all future measurements.
b) Measure the radioactivity at a place, where the current radioactivity is known and assign this known gauge value and its unit to the value, measured by your smartphone to establish a relation between the internal hardware-dependent values of the smartphone and the real absolute quantity of radioactivity. The more exact the calibration and the higher the gauge value, the better the measurement results. From then on your radioactivity-meter is able to indicate the current radioactivity.
Due to the different hardware of the various smartphones we cannot ensure, that Radioactivity-Meter works on all smartphones with sufficient accuracy.
Since Radioactivity-Meter uses statistical algorithms to calculate the stochastic noise processes, the measuring situations should be always as similar as possible to avoid deviations of the metered values: same ambient temperature (without the zero point fixing), same up time of the smartphone, same method for sealing the camera lens etc. For this reason only single measurements are possible, no continuous measurements.
That way you can use your smartphone to determine at least the tendency for the changes of the radioactivity radiation.

The Internal Contamination Clinical Reference app is a reference tool to be used for educational and informational purposes only.
