OctaVR is a VR video player built around one goal: playing 8K footage on a phone without the stutter and audio drift that most players hit at that resolution.

BUILT FOR 8K

Most players either refuse 8K files outright or play them with audio that slowly drifts out of sync. OctaVR handles the decoder setup differently so that high-bitrate 8K files start and stay in sync.

If your device can decode 8K but still struggles to keep up, the optional pre-optimization feature converts a file from 60fps to 30fps. You trade a little sharpness for smooth playback. The conversion runs in the background with a progress notification, so you can leave the screen off while it works, and the converted file is used automatically the next time you open that video. If your videos already play well, you never need this feature.


HANDS-FREE CONTROL

Turn on gaze control and the menus follow your head instead of your hands. Look down and a compact control panel fades into view with a targeting dot at the centre of your gaze. Hold the dot on a button for a moment and it activates.

You can play and pause, skip, jump between files, seek anywhere in the video, adjust volume and brightness, and change field of view or IPD — all without reaching for a controller. The appearance angle, fade, and hold time are all adjustable.

• Frame correction: draw a box around the area you want, and it becomes the new full screen — useful when the phone sits slightly off-centre in the headset
• Double-tap to skip, with a configurable skip length

• Brightness and volume, with optional system volume sync
• Adjustable menu size and position


BACKGROUND MUSIC

Play a music file from your device on top of the video audio, on repeat. Video volume and music volume are separate, so you can have both at full strength rather than splitting one level between them.


FREE AND PREMIUM

The free version plays three videos per day and shows a full-screen ad before playback.

The premium unlock is a one-time purchase — no subscription. It removes the daily limit and the ads, and unlocks unlimited use of the pre-optimization feature.

REQUIREMENTS

8K playback depends on your device's hardware decoder. Phones without 8K decoding will still play 4K and lower content normally. A smartphone VR headset is recommended for stereoscopic viewing.
