I got it working after a few tries. Make sure you go into your kettle's settings and turn on General > Wireless (the app fails to mention this). For other devices I have seen Wi-Fi scanning fail when there are too many other networks like if you're in an apartment or something. So if you really need an update you could take your router and kettle somewhere else, which is definitely a huge inconvenience. Luckily I didn't have that issue this time.

This app is complete garbage. It found my device once out of about 20 scan attempts. Upon connecting my device that one time and connecting the wifi, the firmware failed to update. The error message said to make sure the kettle is plugged in and connected to WiFi at all times but offered no way of trying to re-update the firmware. I had to delete the app, redownload, and go through this hell again only for the app to still be glitchy and ineffective.

The app is beyond simplistic, and the fact that the kettle requires a 2.4Ghz network is quaint (how bizarre to complain about the WiFi network support for a tea kettle, though). An actual problem is that the entry field for the WiFI password is set to capitalize the first letter (like it's the start of a sentence, not a password). It took me 3 tries to figure out that that's what was causing it to fail. Once I fixed that it was fine.
