FishCoin measures a fish from a short video, using a 76 mm FishCoin token in the frame as the scale reference. Lay the fish down, put the token beside it, record about three seconds, and the app sends the clip off to be measured.
No stretching a tape over a wet, moving fish on a rolling deck. No holding the fish up to the camera and hoping. One object of known size, in shot.
HOW IT WORKS
• Record a three-second clip of the fish with a FishCoin token beside it.
• The clip uploads, and the measuring pipeline works out the fish's length in millimetres from the token's known 76 mm diameter.
• Your catch appears in your gallery with its measurement, where you caught it, and when.
COMPETE, IF YOU WANT TO
• Leaderboards for biggest fish, total length and fish count.
• Player-versus-player challenges: pick an opponent, set a window, and whoever lands the longest fish inside it takes it. Everyone who took part gets the result when it closes.
• Tournaments and events, where they are running near you.
Challenges are free. There is nothing to buy in this app.
HELP US MEASURE BETTER
If you have a tape with you, turn on tape-measure mode and enter the fish's real length. That number is the only genuine reference the measuring system has, and every one of them makes it better for everyone. Measure total length with the tail pinched to a point — the app says so at the moment you type the number.
It is optional, and skipping it is a completely normal thing to do.
BEING STRAIGHT ABOUT WHAT THIS DOES AND DOESN'T DO YET
• Only catches the app is confident about get a published measurement. Most come back as "being checked". If you land a good fish and it doesn't count, that is our measuring, not anything you did.
• Nothing identifies the species. Species restrictions on a challenge are not enforced.
• Challenge invitations go out by email. An invite sent to a phone number will not notify anyone yet.
• The app is built for finfish, sharks included. Crayfish, lobster and crab need a different shape model and are not supported.
WHAT IT NEEDS FROM YOUR PHONE
• Camera, to record the catch.
• Precise location, which is required rather than optional: a catch will not send without a GPS fix accurate to about 75 metres. The position labels the catch by country and state for the boards, and is shown on public pages blurred to about a mile across. The exact coordinate stays in our records. Public pages never show your exact position — the coordinate is blurred to a grid roughly a mile across before it is published.
• An email address and a phone number, before your first catch will send.
Signing in is anonymous by default. You only need a Google account for entering a tournament or sending a challenge, and everything else works without one.
The full detail of what is collected and why is at fishcoin.ai/privacy.
FishCoin is a beta. It is worked on constantly, the release notes at fishcoin.ai/whats-new say exactly what changed in each build, and a report about a fish it measured badly is the single most useful thing you can send us.
Measure your catch on video with a FishCoin token, and see how it ranks.
