Everyone at the table gets the same secret. Everyone except one.
Imposter is a pass the phone party word game for 3 to 20 players, and the game itself plays completely offline. One phone goes around the room. Most of you see the secret category. One of you sees nothing but the word IMPOSTER, and has to fake it well enough to survive the vote.
HOW A ROUND GOES
Pass the phone. Each player reads their card alone, then hands it on. Everyone else looks away. That part is on you, not the app.
Say one word. Going around the table, each player says a single word connected to the secret. Obvious enough to prove you know it, vague enough not to hand it to the imposter. The round moves at the table's pace, and the phone keeps the speaking order straight.
Vote. Talk it out, accuse someone, and count the hands. It takes a majority to send anyone home, and whose hands go up decides who scores, so a headcount is not enough.
Find out. Guess right and the room takes the points. Guess wrong and the imposter is still sitting there, listening to every word you say next.
A caught imposter still gets one last shot. Name the secret category, typed rather than said out loud, and walk away with a personal win while the room is busy celebrating.
WHAT YOU GET
142 secret categories, from pizza toppings and zoo animals to volcanoes, lighthouses, and things that smell bad.
3 to 20 players on one phone. No second device, no lobby code, no account, and no waiting for anyone to download anything.
Starter words, an optional setting that hands the imposter a safe generic word to open with. It makes a first game with new players far less brutal.
Pick how many imposters are in play, or let the app randomize it so the room does not even know how many people are lying.
A running scoreboard for the evening, so the argument at the end has numbers behind it.
Names and seat order under your control, with hold and drag to reorder.
Commentary that reacts to how each round actually ended, in hundreds of lines, so it almost never says the same thing twice. It is played for laughs and owes more to old gangster movies than to anything gruesome.
WHERE IT ACTUALLY GETS PLAYED
Family game night, once the board games have run out.
Road trips and long drives. This is one of the few games to play on a road trip with no wifi, and it does not care that the bars have quietly disappeared.
Camping, cabins, planes, basements, and anywhere else you need no wifi games. It is an offline party game in the literal sense. Turn the data off and nothing changes.
Icebreakers. A classroom icebreaker, a first day, a work offsite, a group of teens who have just met. Hand it over and give it ten minutes.
Small rooms and big ones. Party games for 3 people are rare, and so are games for large groups of 10 or more. This is both.
Waiting rooms, airports, long layovers, and any table where the conversation has died.
If you like social deduction, bluffing, and reading a room, this is that, without a board, a deck of cards, or a rules argument. Think of it as a word association party game where one person is making it up.
FREE, OR NINETY NINE CENTS TO LOSE THE ADS
Imposter is free and shows ads. One purchase of ninety nine cents removes them permanently. Not a subscription, not a trial, not a monthly anything, and there is never going to be one. If you have been looking for a party game with no subscription, this is it.
The game itself is fully offline and never needs a connection. On the free version the ads are the only thing reaching the internet, and when they cannot load, the game simply carries on. Buy the ad removal and the app stops talking to the internet at all.
No sign in, no profile, no account. The app asks for no camera, microphone, contacts, storage, or location permissions, and it never will.
HOW MANY PEOPLE
Three is the minimum. Six is where it starts to get properly difficult. Twenty is chaos, and that is allowed.
