About this app

The next time you see a butterfly or moth you don't recognize, reach for your pocket and identify it using your phone. You can flip through the big list of common butterflies and moths in your region (or worldwide), or filter your search by colour, time of year and size as an identifier. No need to wait until you get home to ID that insect while trying to remember what it looked like!

Once you have identification you can add it to your "collection" (don't worry - no butterflies will be harmed), and we'll automatically record the time and location of your sighting. And just to make it even more fun for kids and adults alike, you can score points depending on how rare the sighting. The app will record your sightings and count up your total score, so you can enjoy nature, do your bit for conservation, and have fun at the same time. The application is accurate, ad-free, and IAP-free and does not require a data connection, so it will continue to work as a field guide when you need it. It's like having a Lepidopterist in your pocket!

This app could develop into something great, but it has a long way to go. It lacks a lot of species. There is no way to filter to only view butterflies or only moths. Instead of trying to make an app that lists butterflies from around the world, with each database being only slightly complete, the creators should focus on a specific country and make sure to have information on EVERY species in that area, then do the same with the next country, instead of providing incomplete databases.

In the filter you can choose the 'type'. The options are: Butterfly, Day-flying moth, Moth, any moth, etc. We are initially focussing on Western Europe and Northern America, but to be frank we'll probably never be able to list every species - the order Lepidoptera comprises over 160,000 species, and this is intended as a general field guide.

Butterfly Spotter is amazing for nature lovers! The identification is fast, accurate, and the photo guide makes it easy to learn different species. I love tracking my sightings and seeing butterflies near me on the map. The interface is clean and kid-friendly too. Would love more info on habitats and seasonal patterns added. Overall, a beautiful and educational app. Highly recommend it for students, photographers, and anyone curious about butterflies.

Very good app, really grateful for the offline availability! Had some suggestions for future updates, it would be useful to be able to upload pictures directly from gallery instead of the app only allowing camera access, and possibly add a suggestions section for more butterflies and moths? I've found two things that aren't recorded in the app so far (purple leaf blue butterfly and an unidentified moth), and it would be handy to possibly upload the picture and suggest an addition
