About this app

From one end of the planet to the other, the French we speak does not have the same colors or the same sounds. Who has never been surprised, when traveling outside their home region, by the use of such and such an expression or the pronunciation of such and such a word?

The Français de nos Régions application was designed to document the geographical variation of French spoken across the Francophonie, from Paris to Montreal, via Dakar and Nouméa. Help us showcase this variation while having fun!

Anyone whose mother tongue or language of heart is French can participate.

How it works ? The application has four components:

>> The Locate Me component is based on the results of surveys in which tens of thousands of Francophones have taken part since 2015 as part of the "French in our Regions" surveys. From region to region, if the precision is not the same, it is because we do not always have enough data for the algorithm to be more precise. Thanks to the responses that we will collect, we will soon be able to develop a new, more efficient geolocation algorithm!

>> The Atlas section allows users of the application to indicate what they call such and such an object, or how they name such and such a situation or such or such activity, and therefore to account for the geographical richness of French worldwide. It also makes it possible to collect voice recordings, and therefore to document the diversity of accents of French that are spoken in the four corners of the Francophonie. Don't hesitate to make your voice heard, and to listen to the voices of others!

>> The Surveys component consists of surveys, the responses of which will allow us to assess the vitality of certain regional expressions (words, expressions and pronunciations), as well as their area of extension. Note when you participate that it is not a question of saying which variant (s) is / are correct from the point of view of standard French or dictionaries, but to say which variant (s) ) you use when you talk to someone, in everyday life.

>> In the Information section, you can learn a little more about who we are, but also how the personal data you send are processed. A contact form is also available to send us your suggestions or comments.

Don't hesitate to subscribe to receive updates, every two weeks there are new questions for you to answer :).

Your participation is precious, it consists of an important contribution to research and documentation of French. Thank you !
