About this app

Funetical is a vocabulary app for Mandarin learners who want efficient study. Add the words you actually need, review them in varied sentences with audio, and let spaced repetition handle the scheduling.

Study your own material: paste in words from class notes, a textbook, a song, or a photo of a menu. Funetical picks out the vocabulary and builds flashcards with definitions, example sentences and audio for each word, so there is nothing to type up by hand. Or start from the built-in collections, which cover HSK 1 to 6 on the new HSK 3.0 standard.

Words are reviewed through varied sentences rather than one fixed example. With a single example sentence you end up memorising the card instead of the word; Funetical rotates through different sentences, built from vocabulary at or below your level, so recognition carries over to real reading and listening.

Understanding speech is the hardest part of Mandarin, so listening reviews get their own track, scheduled separately from reading. Every sentence has audio, with a slow-speed option on simpler sentences.
