About this game

One player never gets the word. Everyone else does. That is the whole game.

The imposter has to talk about something they cannot see, and the group has to work out who is bluffing. Rounds are short, the rules take one sentence to explain, and the argument afterwards usually lasts longer than the round did.

Play it as a word party game around a single phone, or open an online room and play with people who are somewhere else.

🎭 How the imposter game works

Everyone sees the secret word except the hidden imposter, who sees a blank card. Players take turns giving one clue each. Then the group talks, votes, and uncovers whoever they think was faking it. Every question is a challenge for the imposter. Guess right and the group wins. Guess wrong and the imposter walks away with it.

📱 One phone or online

Pass and play on a single device when everyone is in the same room - no second phone, no accounts to hand around. Or create an online room and let the group join from their own devices for a remote game night.

⚙️ Set up the round your way

Choose how many imposters are hiding, switch the blank card on or off, and decide whether roles get revealed at the end. A small group and a big group want different settings, so the host picks.

Do we all need the app? Not for pass and play - one phone is enough for the whole group. Online rooms need a device each.

How many players? It works with a small group and scales up to a crowded room.

How long is a round? A few minutes. Most groups play several in a row without meaning to.

Is it a spy game or a word game? Both. The mechanic is social deduction, the content is words and topics.

💡 Getting better at it

The trick to surviving as the imposter is giving a clue that is completely true and completely useless. Say too little and you look nervous. Say too much and you look like someone proving a point. The best players sound slightly bored.

And if you are not the imposter, watch who agrees with everyone. Agreement is cheap when you have nothing to say.
