Accurate to about <1° checked against Suunto "Pro" compass. This is seriously good. I am 4.4 ° positive (East) declination and I've set the bezel for this. Works perfectly. I would use this phone compass by itself in any non-wilderness setting. In open areas not close to anything I would use a topo map, the Suunto and this digital compass as well. Highly recommended.
This is the first compass app I've tried that actually seems to work on my phone. All others seem to be negatively affected by extraneous magnetic fields. I've only just bought it so I'll test it out over time and update accordingly. It's a simple compass display with a manually rotatable bezel. No frills, no whistles, no bells! Nothing to complicate it. I like the simplicity of that. It just does what it says.
Have tried a few compass apps, but gave up because they didn't do the job. This one is great. It's accurate (checked against my Silva), nicely damped, and simple! Cheers!
What makes a good app isn't a bunch of complicated extra stuff. A good app is one that does what it's supposed to do. This one does. I checked it against a real life orienteering compass and a USGS topographical map. Needle on app lines up perfectly with magnetic North, as it should (16 1/2 degrees declination to the right, due to the fact that our planet is not on perfect axis with the North star (Polaris) by exactly 16 1/2 degrees. What the needle of a compass points to is a large iron deposit in the crust of the North pole which shifts a little bit every year so it changes which means it doesn't stay at 16 1/2 degrees. But for practical purposes you can assume that magnetic North is more or less 16 1/2 degrees to the right of true North...I'm not making this up. Look it up. Anyways, what I'm saying is this compass lines up with magnetic North as it should.
Looks great - working so far. No settings needed - and can click never again on calibration info (I've seen that 3 or 4 times when G Maps gets wonky. Googles animation seems to show you twisting your phone edge on at two points of the ∞ pattern - maybe it's necessary - maybe just to not hurt your wrist).
The only slight glitch I see is it has a very slight tendency to not hold at 0° magnetic true North. Even sitting on a very secure stationary perfectly flat surface it moves one way or the other off of 0° N. Other than that one tiny glitch it's in my opinion among the best quality apps out there to be had. I use the Motorola Droid Turbo 2 Android and yes I would highly recommend this app to anyone for business or just fun.
