Most apps on your phone want to know exactly where you are. Weather apps, food apps, browsers, social apps. Most of them don't really need it.
GentleSquid lets you set a custom GPS coordinate on your device. Tap a spot on the map, save it, apply it. Your phone reports that location to any app that asks.
What it's good for:
Stopping apps from logging your real movements. Testing apps that behave differently by region. Development work that needs a specific coordinate without leaving your desk. Travel and weather apps you want to point at a different city.
What this app promises:
No ads. Ever.
No tracking. No analytics, no telemetry, no usage stats sent anywhere.
No account. There's nothing to sign in to.
No subscription. Pay once, the app is yours.
No in-app purchases.
How it works:
The app uses Android's built-in mock location feature, the same one the Android SDK exposes for testing. Turn on Developer Options on your phone, select GentleSquid as your "Mock location app", and from then on it can override your GPS when you want it to. The app walks you through that setup on first launch.
What it doesn't do:
It doesn't run in the background. It only sets a location when asked. It doesn't collect or transmit your location data. Favorites and the last picked spot are saved on the device and nowhere else. There are no servers behind it. The only network call the app makes is to Mapbox, to render map tiles for the picker. That's it.
Why it costs money:
Built by one person. The price covers the developer account fee, the Mapbox bill, and ongoing maintenance. No subscription, no upsells, no follow-up purchases. If a bug shows up, the email address in the privacy policy reaches a real human who will respond.
