About this app

getUBetter provides local digital self-management support for all common musculoskeletal injuries and conditions such as back, neck, or knee pain as well as pelvic floor health.

It is offered to patients free of change and provides content tailored by their local NHS clinical team.

The app aims to support patients in building trust in the own recovery, gaining a better understanding of when and where to seek help if necessary, and developing the confidence to manage potential future episodes.

The app is suitable for:
• People with any new, recurrent, or ongoing muscle or joint problem
• People over 18 years of age
• People who would benefit from self-management support
• In some areas of the NHS, you might be provided getUBetter to support pelvic floor dysfunction

The app is not suitable for:
• People under the age of 18 years of age
• People with severe, worsening symptoms where self-management is not advised by a clinician
• People with an injury or condition that requires regular physiotherapy or medical management e.g., after surgery or an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture
• People with worsening neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness, an unexplained new onset of bladder and bowel symptoms)

I was initially annoyed at being directed to an app instead of seeing a physiotherapist, after being referred by my GP, but once you get familiar with navigating the sections, the actual exercise demonstrations and regimes are helpful. However, I have found it glitschy. Eg when I click on 'my exercises', the screen splits and freezes. When I was initially able to access this section, it was empty, meaning it doesn't feel personalised, but the 'support modules' do offer general guidance.

Not very intuitive UI. Questions don't always allow for the nuances of issues - eg fluctuating pain/intermittent pain/flare-ups. Needs free text boxes to allow patients to clarify. I KNOW I don't need the urgent GP appointment recommended & suspect that recommendation is a direct result of the crudeness of the questions asked. Also unhelpful for multiple joint pains. Would be helpful to just be able to access exercise sheets for specific joints without the Spanish inquisition.

I would not recommend this app to anyone and its use by the NHS is scandalous to be honest. Using the app in place of in-person physiotherapy left me without adequate advice about what I was doing wrong or what I needed to really do to get better. As a result I developed leg pain that became so bad I eventually could not walk for more than 10 mins. After seeing a private osteopath I finally discovered the exercises this app gave me caused tendonitis in my right leg. This didn't need to happen.
