The One Car Challenge is an 11-week research pilot from LA Metro, in partnership with King's College London, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), and the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). It looks at what happens when households with more than one car keep one of them under 3 miles a week and use Metro, walking, biking, or ride-share instead. The app is powered by GoCarma.

If you live in LA County and your household owns two or more vehicles, you can join — and earn $120 in every week you meet the mileage rule.

HOW TO JOIN
• Pre-register at metro.net/onecar (note: pre-registrations are now closed)
• If selected, you'll receive an invite from LA Metro to enrol in the app
• Sign-up takes about five minutes once you're invited

HOW IT WORKS
• The pilot runs 11 weeks — a baseline week, then two five-week phases
• Every participant does both earning weeks and research weeks
• Cohort 1 earns first, then contributes research
• Cohort 2 does research first, then earns
• Both cohorts share the same calendar dates

WHAT YOU DO EACH WEEK
• Every Sunday, an odometer reading is captured — snap a photo of your dashboard, or connect your car and let Auto-Submit read it for you
• During earning weeks, keep one household vehicle under 3 miles Monday–Sunday to earn $120 that week
• During research weeks, drive as you normally would — the reading still submits for LA Metro's research, no mileage limit applies

REPORTING TAKES SECONDS
• Snap a photo of your odometer each Sunday, OR
• Connect a supported vehicle and the app reads it automatically (Smartcar)
• A short grace period covers you if you're late

YOUR REWARDS
• $120 in every earning week your household meets the mileage rule
• A single payout shortly after the pilot — virtual Visa card by email, or direct to your debit card
• Track your running balance on the home screen

LINK YOUR LA METRO TAP CARD (OPTIONAL)
Linking your TAP card lets LA Metro see your transit usage for the pilot's research. It doesn't affect your rewards, and your trips are not shown inside the app.

PRIVACY
The One Car Challenge only collects what's needed to run the pilot: odometer readings, brief in-app surveys, and (if you link it) TAP card usage. Data is shared in aggregated, anonymous form with LA Metro, King's College London, CARB, and SCAG for research. We don't share data with advertisers.

WHO CAN JOIN
• You live in Los Angeles County
• You have two or more vehicles in your household
• You've pre-registered at metro.net/onecar and been invited by LA Metro
• LA Metro employees and their family members are not eligible

ABOUT THE PILOT

The One Car Challenge is part of LA Metro's research — with King's College London, CARB, and SCAG — into how people change travel habits when one household vehicle is taken out of daily driving. Enrolment closes at the end of the baseline week; the study needs the same vehicles measured for all 11 weeks.
