Most media apps hide a sleep timer somewhere in their settings, and some do not have one at all. Goodnight Timer is one timer for all of them — no ads, no account.
Not sure your player will listen? A 5-second test shows you exactly what will happen when the timer ends, before you go to sleep.
WHAT IT DOES
• Set a duration, or a clock time like 23:30
• Leave the app and keep using your phone
• When the timer ends, playback is paused
• If a player does not respond, media volume is turned down to zero as a fallback, so it really does become quiet
• Optional fade-out beforehand, so the end is not abrupt
• Optionally switch the screen off at the end, the way a short press on the power button does
• Control it from the notification: +5 minutes, +10 minutes, or stop now
BUILT TO ACTUALLY FIRE
The timer is stored with an absolute end time and an exact alarm, not a countdown that dies with the app. It survives closing the app, the screen turning off and a restart of the phone. If your device was switched off past the end time, the timer is simply recorded as finished — it will not mute your phone hours later.
FREE, AND GENUINELY USEFUL
Everything above is free. Reliable stopping is never behind a paywall.
PREMIUM — A ONE-TIME PURCHASE
• Headphone Guard: pause playback if your headphones disconnect while a timer runs, so the phone speaker does not suddenly play out loud
• Per-app profiles: give a media app its own default timer
• Bedtime routines you start with one tap
• Quick Settings tile and a home-screen widget
• Longer fade-outs
• Unlimited saved durations
• A true-black theme for AMOLED screens
• Milliseconds on the running countdown
No subscription. One purchase, kept by your Google Play account.
PRIVACY
No account, no sign-in, no cloud. No ads and no advertising SDK. No third-party analytics.
Your timer, your settings and your presets stay in the app's private storage on this device. Goodnight Timer never reads, stores or uploads the contents of your notifications, and never records what you listen to or watch.
PERMISSIONS, AND WHY
• Notification access — the only way Android lets an app see and pause other apps' media. Only the package name of an active media session is used, never titles, artists or artwork. You can skip it: the timer still works and can make things quiet by muting media volume.
• Alarms & reminders — so the timer ends at the time you chose, even with the screen off.
• Notifications — for the countdown and its controls.
• Device administrator — only if you switch on “Turn the screen off”. Android allows an app to lock the screen no other way. Goodnight Timer asks for that single power and no other: it cannot erase data or change passwords.
Important: while the device administrator is active, Android will not let you uninstall the app. To uninstall, first switch off “Turn the screen off” in Goodnight Timer — that hands the permission straight back.
Each one is explained in the app before anything is requested, and the in-app Privacy screen tells you exactly what is stored and how to take any permission back.
WHAT IT DOES NOT DO
It cannot switch your phone off or shut it down, and it does not claim to. It stops or pauses playback, turns media volume down, can lock the screen if you ask it to, and leaves your alarm and ringer volume alone.
Works offline. English and German.
Start a timer, fall asleep, and your media really does become quiet on time.
