If you enjoy playing Mau Mau, this Mau Mau app with Skat (clubs, spades, hearts, diamonds) or Bavarian deck (acorns, leaves, hearts, bells) is a must-have on your smartphone. Also known regionally as Neunerln!
The app is easy to use and can be fully customized to your liking in the settings: starting number of cards, required victory points, game speed, sound and background music, custom names for yourself and the computer opponents, and a beginner mode in which the computer plays more leniently. This makes it suitable for both experienced Mau-Mau players looking for entertainment and beginners who want to learn the card game – the rules are always available to look up in the app.
Only the first player to get rid of all their cards at the end of the round receives points – the others get nothing. By default, the point values of the cards remaining in the players' hands are counted (e.g., Ace = 11, Seven = 7, Ten = 10...). Those who prefer a more traditional approach can set a flat rate of 1 point per round won in the settings. The game continues until one player reaches the set number of victory points.
Only the first player to get rid of all their cards receives points at the end of the round – the others receive nothing. Rules:
Each player receives 5 cards (selectable between 3 and 6 in the settings). An additional card is revealed in the center. Players then proceed clockwise, playing one matching card. If a player has no matching card, they must draw a new card from the deck – this card can then be played immediately, or they can skip their turn.
If a player has only one card left, they announce "Mau." If they manage to get rid of this last card, they call "Mau-Mau," and the round ends.
Generally, any card can be played that matches the rank or suit of the card on the table.
Special rules/house rules (these and others can be individually enabled or disabled in the settings):
7 = The next player must draw two cards or also play a seven and increase the number of cards they draw by two.
8 = The next player skips their turn.
9 = Reverse direction.
Ace = You may immediately play another of your own cards.
King = Like the Seven, but four cards must be drawn.
Jack/Unter = Choice card. It cannot be played if there are still cards to be drawn (by a Seven or King) – it can only be played afterward. Whoever plays a Jack/Unter may choose a suit, which must match the suit of the next card played.
Additionally configurable: whether Sevens and Kings of the same suit can be stacked on top of each other, and whether another Jack/Unter can be played immediately after a suit choice.
Good luck!
