About this app

Some apps are built to pull you back in. Colour is a big part of the hook: saturated reds, bright badges, thumbnails that shout. GrayGate takes the colour out of the specific apps you're fighting with, and gives it back the moment you leave.

Pick your problem apps (social, shopping, games, video, whatever gets you) and they open in grayscale. Everything else on your phone stays in full colour: your camera, your maps, your photos, your messages. Switch away and the colour comes back on its own.

One 60-second setup. Then never again.
Android doesn't let a normal app touch the display filter, so GrayGate needs one permission granted from a computer. You do it once. Not at every reboot, not after updates.
1. Turn on USB debugging (about 30 seconds)
2. Plug into any computer: Mac, Windows, or Linux
3. Tap "Copy command" in the app, paste it, press Enter
Then unplug and forget about it. No root. No accessibility service.

If you already use a colour-correction filter for colour blindness, GrayGate saves your setting and puts it back.

It can't leak what it never collects
GrayGate makes zero network requests. There's no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no ad library. Your app list and your choices never leave your phone.

What else is in there
- Quick Settings tile: cycle Auto, Force Gray, and Force Color from your shade (Force Gray is handy when you want the whole phone quiet for a while)

Where it falls short
Being straight with you before you buy:
- Android gives third-party apps no true per-app filter, so when a grayed app is open, the whole screen goes gray, status bar and nav bar included. Every app in this category shares that limit.
- There's about a 1 to 2 second delay when you switch apps, because GrayGate checks which app is open on a short timer instead of hooking into the system. That's the trade-off for not using an accessibility service.
- You need a computer (and a USB cable) for the one-time setup.

Why grayscale?
Colour is the hook. Take it away from the apps that eat your time and a lot of the pull just stops. GrayGate lets you do that one app at a time, without draining the colour out of the things you actually want to see.
