In the most distant reaches of the world, magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing. As the great powers of Europe stretch their colonial empires further and further, they will inevitably lay claim to a place where spirits still hold power - and when they do, the land itself will fight back alongside the islanders who live there.

Spirit Island is a cooperative settler-destruction strategy game designed by R. Eric Reuss and set in an alternate-history world around A.D. 1700. Players become different Spirits of the land, each with their own unique elemental powers, forced to defend their island home from colonizing Invaders spreading blight and destruction. Your Spirits work with the native Dahan to increase your power and drive the invading colonists from your island in this strategic area-control game.

Ratings and reviews

Pretty good port of the board game to digital. Love that it runs all the mechanics automatically. I do think the monthly subscription is a pretty good deal despite all the pricing complaints. Unfortunately, offline play doesn't work reliably and there's a bug that forces you to play with the expansion even when it's turned off. So unsubscribing until those are fixed. Edit -- new update seems to have resolved the previous issues and working much better now.

My favorite game ever. This is a smooth, reliable, full-featured premium app. The price to own is high but I am happy to buy once, play forever, with no ads. Lots of quality of life (e.g., auto selection when a choice is equivalent). Disclaimer: I am a super fan (bought all the DLC, bought all the physical game and expansions). Also, I have not used this app for multi-player.

The automation makes it markedly easier for new players to get into the game and its probably the best way to learn. I wish there was a way to back out of a game you just started without it automatically counting as a loss, though. If you accidentally pick a spirit you dislike or start a game you've lost before you started (France 6 paired with Blitz for example) there's no way to just reset without it counting as a loss. It is very much a fantastic way to learn and get into this game, though.

What's new

This update has a few bug fixes, including:
- Fixed a crash with using Unrelenting Growth with Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds, then using Undo in certain situations.
- Generating too much Fear after earning Terror Level "Victory" in a single action no longer causes the game to get stuck.
- Fixed a problem where Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds was not able to properly undo some of their growth in certain situations.
