About this app

Receipts, contracts, handwritten notes. A photo of a paper document is used not by the person who took it, but by whoever reads it later. It may look fine on the spot, yet low resolution or soft focus can leave the text unreadable later. QualityShot is a camera built so that unreadable photos are not taken in the first place.

■ No capture below 3.88 megapixels
Before you shoot, the app checks how many pixels the camera will actually deliver. While the output is below 3.88 megapixels (3,880,000 pixels), the capture button stays disabled, so a receipt is never shot in a low-resolution mode by accident.
When the requirement is not met, the screen shows what falls short. The button is never disabled without an explanation.

■ Auto capture: waits for focus, then shoots
Turn on "Auto capture" and tap the capture button, and the photo is taken once the sharpness in the middle of the frame reaches the threshold. It helps you avoid shots with camera shake or soft focus.
Until the threshold is reached, nothing is captured. It never settles for a weaker shot when time runs out. Press the shutter again while it waits to stop.

■ Continuous capture: a stack of receipts in one go
Turn on "Continuous capture" and the app goes straight back to the next shot instead of showing the result screen. The resolution check and the measurements for each photo stay the same.
A short notice confirms each save, and adds a word when focus may be soft or sharpness could not be judged. With no capture history, sharing with measurements is done from each photo's result screen.

■ Capture aids: volume keys, light, tilt, measurement frame
The volume keys also work as a shutter, so you can hold the paper down and shoot one-handed. When it is dark, turn on the light with "Torch".
The device tilt is shown as a number, and the area where sharpness is measured can be shown as a frame (Settings, off by default). Both are display only: they change neither where sharpness is measured nor what is recorded.
The app does not straighten the image after capture (keystone correction), because a corrected image would no longer match the recorded measurements.

■ Four measurements recorded after each shot
- Output pixels (width × height)
- Output format and bit depth (JPEG, 8 bits per channel)
- Tone levels in use (for each of R, G and B, how many of the 256 levels actually appear)
- Sharpness score (from the high-frequency detail in the middle of the frame; a hint for checking focus)

■ Share with the measurements attached
Send the photo with a summary of its measurements through Android's share menu. Whoever receives your expense claim can see what resolution it was taken at.

■ No text recognition (OCR)
The app goes as far as leaving a photo that can be read later. It does not recognize text, scan, or make PDFs. Photos are saved to your gallery, so read or submit them with your usual apps.

■ "Undetermined" when it cannot be judged
The sharpness score means little for subjects with little detail to begin with, such as a white wall or blank paper, and it cannot tell intentional background blur from missed focus. When a judgment cannot be made, the app shows "Undetermined" instead of forcing a conclusion.

■ Photos and measurements are never sent off this device
No server, no account. Photos are stored on the device, and sharing happens only when you do it.
* The app is free and shows ads (Google AdMob). The ad SDK does use the network to deliver ads, so this is not an offline-only app. Ads appear only on the result and settings screens, never on the capture screen.

■ Before you start
- Camera permission is required (asked when you open the capture screen).
- If a camera on your device cannot deliver 3.88 megapixels, that camera cannot capture. On some models the front camera falls short.
- The sharpness score is a relative hint that depends on the model and subject, so it cannot be compared across devices.
- No in-app purchases.
Readable photos of receipts and documents. No shutter below 3.88 megapixels.
