This keyboard faithfully reflects the principles of creation recorded in the Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon, printed in 1446.
Consonants are arranged with the sub-eum, seol-eum, labial, and dental consonants on the four sides, and the guttural consonants in the center. The basic consonants of the Five Elements (ㄱ, ㄴ, ㅁ, ㅅ, ㅇ) are arranged accordingly.
Vowel letters are arranged with the basic consonants of North (1), South (2), East (3), and West (4) on the four sides (ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅏ, ㅓ), while the first consonant of Heaven, Earth, and Man (천) (・) is placed in the center (5).
The basic consonant letters are designed so that when pushed inward, the full consonants (ㄹ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ) are entered, and when pushed outward, the second consonant (ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅊ) are entered. (However, the semitone ㄹ is arranged as an exception.)
Swiping the basic vowel inward will input ㅠ (6), ㅛ (7), ㅕ (8), and ㅑ (9) with a prefix ㅣ (in). Swiping outward will input ㅚ, ㅟ, ㅐ, and ㅔ with a postfix ㅣ (in).
Swiping the central consonant key upward will input the secondary consonant ㅎ. Swiping the central "천" (・) key to the right will input ー (10), and sliding it downward will input ㅣ (인, 사인: uncountable).
