About this app
HContacts Email is an email client for Android. It connects directly to your existing mailbox over IMAP and SMTP, downloads your messages, and lets you read, write, reply to and send mail. A complete contacts app is built in, so your inbox is organised by the person who wrote to you instead of one long list of subject lines.
It works with any standard IMAP account: Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, GMX, Zoho, a company mail server or your own. There is no account to create with us and nothing to sign up for — you connect the mailbox you already have.
GETTING STARTED
1. Open Settings and tap "Email accounts", then "Add account".
2. Enter your email address and password. Settings for common providers are filled in automatically; IMAP and SMTP host, port and encryption can be typed in by hand for any other.
3. Tap "Verify & add" — the app signs in to check the details before saving them.
4. Your inbox downloads and appears grouped by sender.
Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud accounts with two-step verification need an app password from the provider rather than your normal password; the app shows a hint when it recognises one.
READING YOUR MAIL
• Two views of the same mailbox: grouped by sender, or a plain list of everything by date.
• In the sender view, tap a name to expand every message that person has sent you.
• Mail from someone already in your contacts shows their name and photo.
• A favourites section puts your starred people at the top of the list.
• Message bodies download when you open a message and stay on the device, so mail you have read stays readable offline.
• New mail is checked when you open the app, when you return to it, when you switch to the Mail tab, and whenever you pull down to refresh.
• Search across mail and contacts.
WRITING AND SENDING
• Write a new message to anyone, or start one from a contact's card.
• Reply with the original message quoted and the correct threading headers, so your answer lands in the right conversation.
• Send through your own provider's SMTP server over an encrypted connection.
• Add more than one account and choose which one you are writing from.
CONTACTS ARE PART OF THE APP
• Groups and sub-groups, so one person can be in both "Work" and "Football".
• Favourites, archive, search and a statistics view.
• Notes, events, birthdays and a calendar.
• Contact photos, phone numbers, several email addresses per person.
• Backup and restore to a file you choose.
• Available in 13 languages, including English, Russian, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Arabic.
Your address book is never filled in behind your back. Senders you already know are matched to their contact card; everyone else stays plain mail. When someone turns out to be worth keeping, tap the plus on their avatar — and every message they have already sent you moves across to the new contact.
PRIVACY
• We run no servers. Your mail travels between your phone and your own provider and never reaches us.
• Passwords are kept in the Android system keystore, not in the app's database.
• Connections use TLS (SSL or STARTTLS).
• Your mail, contacts and photos stay on your device.
The app is free and supported by advertising. Ad networks receive the advertising and device identifiers described in the privacy policy — never your mail, contacts or password.
WORKS WITH HCONTACTS
If you also use HContacts, the contacts kept there appear here live and read-only, and a contact created here can be handed over to HContacts with one tap. The exchange happens on your device; neither app needs the other.
WHAT THIS VERSION DOES NOT DO
• Only the inbox is synced; other folders and labels are not shown yet.
• Attachments are marked on a message but cannot yet be downloaded or sent.
• Deleting a message removes the copy on your phone; it stays on the mail server.
