About this app

★★★★★

Pronunroid is an educational game that makes practicing English phonetics more fun!

It's aimed at practicing IPA (International Phonetics Alphabet) transcription of English words using General American accent. It has four main parts:

* Guess symbol: In this game, you are presented with three words that share a phonetic symbol which you have to guess.

* Guess pronunciation: In this game you are presented with a written word and you have to write the pronunciation for it in IPA.

* Guess spelling: In this game you are presented with the pronunciation of a word in IPA and you have to write the corresponding word. This, in addition to training your pronunciation skills, trains your spelling!

* Look up word: This function looks up the IPA pronunciation of a word.

Pronunroid is aimed at English as second language (ESL) learners. You can check out the symbols used at Wikitionary.

Right now, Pronunroid uses for the games the 2000 most common English words. However, you can try to look up the pronunciation of any word with the search feature. If Wordnik is aware of different pronunciations, you will get them all.

PERMISSIONS

The application requires access to Internet in order to download the pronunciations. It also sends anonymous statistics about its usage.

The external storage permission is needed for moving the app to the SD card.

Excellent. "Guess word" has been tremendously useful to me. This game just made me exercise in a way I've never before had the opportunity, I could watch videos, research, read textbooks and articles, but this gives a new way to understand pronunciation. "Guess pronuciation" I don't like it, it's too hard, because there is too many ways to transcribe or interpret in IPA any word, for example the schwa can go in a lot of the unstressed syllables of any words, there is words with more than 1 pronunciation. It would be better if it would say it's correct despite this errors, if it would detect it's a possible plausible transcription. It requires some algorithm but it shouldn't be too hard to add a minimal intelligence to filter the most obvious alternatives spellings. Request: Add much more words to "guess word" (such as 10000 most common).

UPDATE: The developer responded, "Yes, there's no function to pronounce IPA, sorry." I raised my stars from 1 to 3 because they responded. Maybe they will add that functionality? 🙄🥺 I found a website that does pronunciation from IPA. 😕🤔 ORIGINAL: Where's the function to pronounce the IPA? This app only offers one-way translation : to IPA.
