Bring historical writing systems to messages, notes and documents with Ancient Input, a dedicated Android keyboard for typing standard Unicode characters.

Choose from 11 scripts: Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, Medieval Futhork, Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, Ogham, Gothic, Phoenician, Imperial Aramaic, Ugaritic, Old Persian and Glagolitic.

Built for exploration and practical typing

Switch scripts quickly by holding the space bar. Use the built-in Latin and symbols layouts whenever you need ordinary letters, numbers or punctuation.

Choose a layout that suits you. QWERTY-inspired phonetic layouts place characters near familiar Latin keys, while alphabetical layouts follow each script's own traditional order. Layout preferences are saved separately for every script.

Press and hold character keys to access Latin transliterations, Hebrew cross-references and encoded character forms where available. You can also choose which encoded form appears on a key by default.

Learn as you type

Open the character guide to explore letter names, transliterations, numeric values, script-specific signs and approximate reconstructed sound values. Where available, audio references demonstrate modern IPA sounds rather than reconstructed historical speech.

Ancient Input supports right-to-left typing for Phoenician and Imperial Aramaic, uppercase Glagolitic, runic variants, Ogham feather marks, and script-specific number signs and punctuation.

Ancient Input works offline and requires no account or network access.

Compatibility

Ancient Input produces standard Unicode text. The app receiving your text must include a font that supports the selected script; otherwise, some characters may appear as empty boxes. Ancient Input is a keyboard and character reference, not a translator, dictionary or spell checker.
