Windsock for Android is an app that automatically downloads and notifies users of new airport weather observations (METARs) and forecasts (TAFs). You can customize Windsock to download new METAR or TAF information for your favorite airports and optionally notify you after doing so. You can also add unlimited METAR and/or TAF widgets for all your favorite airports.

Whether you're a professional pilot or weekend warrior, you can use Windsock to get the latest METAR observation and TAF forecast for your favorite airports. Use it to plan your commute! Use it to let you know when there's clear skies in the forecast for the weekend!

The FREE version includes the following features:

In order to function, Windsock asks for the following permissions. The purpose of each permission is displayed below for total transparency:
INTERNET: Used to download weather data from the US National Weather Service. Also used to display advertising in the Free version of Windsock.
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Used to determine if device is connected to the internet before downloading data.
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: Used to start automatic updates after device boots, if notifications are enabled.
VIBRATE: Used for Pro notifications.
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Allows Pro users to play notification sounds that are located on the SD card.

Ratings and reviews

I like the simplicity of this app, especially having all the TAFs displayed on a single scrollable page. +1 the feature request to manually sort the airports. Also I would love to be able to sort airports into groups so that I could set them up according to flights I make regularly. One last request (sorry) it would be super handy to have have the variance from UTC displayed with each airport, especially on the TAF page. Overall this is my go to app though and premium is well worth it!

Fantastic app. Exactly what I was looking for. It's a nice and light raw METAR readout that updates automatically. Well worth the 99 cents for the pro version to support the developer. Would love the ability to change color and opacity of the widget, but the stock colors are clear and fairly easy on the eyes.

A very good app: I've been using it for years. The latest upgrade broke my pro license for some reason. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app fixed it - at least the adds are gone. The drop down menu still has a "Upgrade to Pro" item on the menu though.
