About this app

This easy-to-use App shows you data on the distribution of indigenous tree species in different natural vegetation types, combined with information on the products and services that the tree species can provide. It arms you – local community members, government agencies, private sector owners, and other land managers – with the information you need to select the best tree species for your landscape restoration or agroforestry effort.

Currently maps are only available for Kenya and Uganda, but we hope to include more maps of East African countries in the future.

The Africa Tree Finder can tell you which trees are best suited to meet the demand for wood-based products, human consumption, animals, and environmental services. It can also tell you the local names of species and provides vital information on propagation and seed treatment, storage and management.

Maps with the distribution of vegetation types and information on species composition for each vegetation type were compiled from the vegetationmap4africa. Descriptions of species were obtained from the RELMA-ICRAF Useful Tree Species series.

The Africa Tree Finder app was designed by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with the support of UK aid from the UK government through the KNOWFOR project. The vegetationmap4africa was funded through various donors that are listed at (http://www.vegetationmap4africa.org/About.html). Developers of the App were Muhammad Ahmad, Benard Onkware, John Innocent and Erick Opiyo. Architects of the App include Roeland Kindt, Tor-Gunnar Vågen, Paulo van Breugel and Jens-Peter B. Lillesø.
