About this app

(Leagan Gaeilge thíos)
Download up to 3 Irish language dictionaries plus grammar and sound files for Irish words with Teanglann, the companion app to www.teanglann.ie. Depending on your needs, you can download any or all of the following:-
• English-Irish Dictionary (de Bhaldraithe, 1959);
• Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla (Ó Dónaill, 1977, Irish-English);
• An Foclóir Beag (Ó Dónaill & Ua Maoileoin, 1991, Irish-Irish);
• Grammar Database with 43,000 files for verbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositions, etc;
• Pronunciation Database with 66,000 sound files in the three major dialects of contemporary Irish.

You can customise usage of the above datasets according to your needs – if you need to free up space on your device you can remove datasets, and then re-download them later if you wish.

Functions and Features:
• Only download the database(s) you want or need;
• Search autocomplete to help you find words and phrases quickly;
• A ‘favourites’ feature to help you save your favourite entries;
• A ‘recent searches’ list to help you return to words you viewed recently;
• Double-tap on a word within an entry to look up a new entry.

This is a must-have reference tool for learners and speakers of all abilities.

This app is produced by Foras na Gaeilge, the statutory body responsible for the promotion of the Irish language, and the dictionaries in the app were digitised as part of the New English-Irish Dictionary project (www.focloir.ie).

This app avoids using data transfer, and that's good for being on the move. Instead, you download the dictionaries you want once. However, similarly spelt words do not appear in this app nor in the Android compatible teanglann website. They appear in the Windows and Linux compatible websites. This is essential for a language with as many spelling variations as Irish Gaelic.

Fantastic reference! My only suggestions would be: 1) Enable the app to open teanglann.ie links (I frequently use Anki flashcards that have links to the site, and it would be nice to have them route to the app). Teanglann is so awesome that when studying other languages, I frequently find myself wishing for "Teanglann, but for ". Teanglann allows Irish to punch *way* out of its weight class as a minority language when it comes to reference material.

I love the website. Use it daily while studying. The app, however, is very buggy. On three different devices now, many or most of the words that should be clickable links are not, and the audio does not play for any word in any dialect.
