About this app

Do the arithmetic in the units you measured in.

Handyman Calc adds and subtracts feet, inches and fractions directly, so you never have to turn 9' 1 3/4" into a decimal and back. Type it the way you read it off the tape.

12' 4 3/8" + 7' 9 1/2" = 20' 1 7/8"

Every answer is also shown in decimal inches, decimal feet and metric, because the person cutting works in one and the person ordering in another.

A construction calculator and fraction calculator in one, for carpenters, framers, contractors, remodelers and DIY homeowners — the handyman calculator that reads numbers the way a tape measure does.

THE CALCULATOR

• Feet, inches and fractions, added, subtracted, multiplied and divided
• Type decimals and millimetres too: 12.25 ft, 3.5 in and 300 mm all work
• Multiply two lengths for square feet, and three for cubic feet and yards
• Divide a run into equal parts and get an exact fraction back, not a rounded decimal
• Divide by a measurement to count instead: 20' divided by 16" answers 15
• Round to 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 — your choice in Settings
• Memory keys, and a tap on ft or in converts the answer on screen
• Works offline: on a job site with no signal, every calculator still works

FIFTEEN CALCULATORS

• Concrete — slabs, footings and round piers, in yards and in 60 lb or 80 lb bags
• Tile and flooring — tiles, boxes and spares
• Paint — gallons and quarts, after doors and windows are deducted
• Drywall — sheets, tape, joint compound and screws for a room and its ceiling
• Decking — boards, joists and screws or hidden clips, with long rows joined on a joist
• Gravel, mulch and soil — cubic yards, tons and bags for a bed, square or round
• Cut list — a plan for every board and its offcut, allowing for the saw kerf. It searches for the fewest boards and tells you when no plan could use fewer
• Board feet — lumber volume and cost
• Roofing — squares and bundles, adjusted for pitch
• Fence — posts, sections, rails and pickets
• Stairs — risers, treads, stringer length and every mark to cut
• Squaring — the diagonal to pull, and how far out of square you are
• Rafters — any two of rise, run, pitch and diagonal give the rest, with the cut angles and rafter length
• Spacing — balusters with every gap under 4", and layout marks at 16" or 24" on center
• Circles and arcs — circumference and area, and an arch's radius from its width and height

SHOW THE MATH, SHARE THE ESTIMATE

• Show the math on any result: every step, in your own numbers
• Share an estimate as text to a supplier, a client or yourself
• Add what you pay per bag, box, sheet, board or yard for an estimated cost
• Add to job: keep the slab, the fence and the steps together with one total, and share the job as text or a PDF

SAVED AND RECENT

Save the numbers you use over and over — "standard garage slab", "6 ft privacy fence" — and one tap on the chip above the form fills every box in again. Everything you work out is also kept in a list you can scroll back through. Both stay on your phone: no account, no sign-in, nothing uploaded.

WHY THE NUMBERS ARE EXACT

Most calculators work in decimals and round at the end. Handyman Calc keeps every measurement as an exact fraction and rounds once, when it shows you the answer. Round a stair riser first and stack seven treads, and the top one sits a sixteenth proud of the floor; carried exactly, the last mark lands on the floor. Material counts round up, because you cannot buy 6.2 boxes of tile.

The stair calculator also says when a flight falls outside the IRC limits — 7 3/4" maximum riser, 10" minimum tread.

Handyman Calc is free and supported by ads. Every key and every calculator works without paying — nothing is locked behind a purchase or a subscription.

What’s new

First release. Add, subtract, multiply and divide in feet, inches and fractions, with the reading drawn on a tape. Fifteen calculators: concrete, tile, paint, drywall, decking, gravel and mulch, cut list, board feet, roofing, fence, stairs, squaring, rafters, spacing and circles. Show the math, add prices, and gather estimates into a job to share as text or PDF. In English and Spanish, and it works with no signal.
