Turkish Maritime Trade and the Maritime Sector were represented for a considerable period after the establishment of the Republic as a Professional Committee within the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce.
The establishment of the Istanbul Chamber of Maritime Commerce began in the early 1980s as a result of initiatives by stakeholders in the maritime community, and the Chamber was officially established on August 26, 1982, with 744 members.
Continuing its activities with increasing effectiveness, the Istanbul Chamber of Maritime Commerce expanded its scope of activity to include provinces bordering the Marmara Sea, then the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, and finally, in May 1989, the Black Sea, due to the universality inherent in the global nature of maritime trade and the needs of the sector.
