Refrain is a journaling app that pays attention. Most journals hand you a blank page and a mood chart. Refrain reads what you have already written and tells you what keeps coming back.
It names the pattern, not just the mood. Write an entry the way you would anywhere else. Tag how it landed if you want: mood, energy, stress. Then Refrain looks across your recent entries, and when the same thread keeps surfacing, it says so plainly: "Avoidance patterns appear often in your reflections." "The need for control comes up repeatedly in your writing." "Thought spirals and worry appear as a recurring theme." Six patterns in all: avoidance, control, isolation, overwork, seeking, and rumination. Refrain notices when the same language keeps returning, and it names it without judging it.
It compares you to you. No population averages, no score against strangers. When Refrain says a stretch has been heavier, it means heavier than your own baseline. It catches the quieter drifts too, like stress climbing week over week, or energy staying low longer than usual.
There is no AI in it. This is the part worth reading twice. Refrain contains no AI model of any kind. Nothing summarizes your entries, nothing sends them away to be interpreted, and nothing learns from what you write. The pattern detection is ordinary logic, running over your own entries and nobody else's. That is what makes the privacy promise structural instead of a pledge. Nothing reads your journal, because there is nothing in it that can.
Private, and provably so. No ads. No analytics. No tracking of any kind. Your entries are bound to your account alone, and there is no sharing feature that could leak them. Sign in with your email and password, or have a sign-in link emailed to you instead. Either way, nothing else is ever asked of you. Erase everything from inside the app: every entry, every insight, the account itself. It happens immediately. No ticket, no waiting period.
Also in here. Keep a line: highlight any passage and save it to your Vault. Steady yourself: Breath Pacing, Grounding, and a 60-Second Reset, for when the day is too loud. Write your way: a dozen typefaces, a photo if you want one, and it saves as you go.
What to expect at the start. Patterns need about five entries before anything appears. Until then Refrain is a quiet, private place to write, which is most of the point anyway.
Refrain is free. No purchases, no premium tier, no locked features. Refrain is a space for reflection, not a medical device. It does not diagnose or treat any condition, and it is not a crisis service.
Private journal that notices your recurring patterns. No ads, no AI, ever.
