About this app

init.Dither is an abstract wallpaper generator that makes pictures out of dots. Shuffle for a new one, change any part of it, and save it at the exact size of your phone, tablet, desktop or e-ink screen.

Every wallpaper is dithered: patterns and gradients with the texture of a print, an old screen or a newspaper photo.

• 12 structures: soft gradients, mesh gradients, ridgelines under a dithered sky, fractal edges, spirals, stripes, cells, honeycombs, reaction patterns and harmonograph lines
• 16 marks: halftone dots, ascii, pixels, blocks, hatching, stipple, tiles and gems
• 20 dithering styles, including bayer grids, blue noise, and Floyd–Steinberg and Atkinson error diffusion
• 102 colour palettes, from black and white to riso inks and film stocks, or build your own
• Shuffle only what you want to change (the pattern, the style, the colour or the mark) and lock the rest

A feed of recipes other people made, arranged in shelves by colour and by structure. Open one as it is, like it, find more like it, or turn it into your own. Share yours with just a name. There is no account, and only the recipe is uploaded, never an image.

What to make with it
A wallpaper generator for anyone who wants a background nobody else has. Abstract wallpapers, gradient wallpapers, pattern wallpapers and geometric wallpapers all come out of the same controls. Use it for dark home screens, retro and 1-bit looks, generative art, e-ink screensavers, desktop backgrounds and prints for the wall.

Free, and unlimited when you want it
The whole app is free: every structure, mark, dither, palette and size. Save as many recipes as you like and export 5 of them as images, plus one more each month when you come back to claim it. A recipe you have exported stays free to export again, at any size.

Unlimited is a single payment, not a subscription. It lifts the export limit and adds more app themes, backgrounds and app icons. Packs of 2, 5 or 10 exports are there if you only need a couple more.
