Your phone won't hold its light on while you look. To keep it lit you have to start recording a video you never wanted — then go and delete it afterwards.

• Timer — 3 or 6 seconds. Wedge the phone in, let go, it shoots without you
• Touch lock — freeze the screen so a palm or a knee can't kill the light
• Dim the light to kill glare on close, wet or shiny surfaces (on phones that support it)
• Mirror the view to read labels that are backwards or upside down
• Put the volume buttons to work — shutter, zoom, or light brightness — so you can shoot without looking at the screen
