About this game

Chess Diorama is a game of chess played on a small island — a board set in the
grass, under trees, with fairy lights strung overhead and water all around. You
can turn the scene, or flatten it to a clean 2D board whenever you would rather
just see the position.

THREE WAYS TO PLAY

• Against the computer — powered by Stockfish, one of the strongest chess
engines in the world. Choose your colour and pick Easy, Medium or Hard.
• Pass and play — one phone, two players, taking turns.
• Online — open a game and wait for someone, or browse the live list of open
games and join one. Games are saved as you play, so a dropped connection or a
closed app does not lose the match.

REVIEW EVERY GAME

When a game ends, step back through it with the engine. Every move is graded —
Brilliant, Best, Good, Inaccuracy, Mistake, Blunder — with an evaluation bar and
a plain-language account of what actually happened. Walk through it move by move
or let it play itself back.

WHILE YOU PLAY

• Legal moves highlight when you pick up a piece
• Drag a piece, or tap it and tap where it goes
• Move list, captured pieces, and a banner for check and checkmate
• Undo, for when you meant to do something else
• Promotion prompts you to choose your piece

MAKE IT YOURS

Three piece styles, four board colours, and a sound toggle. Your choices are
remembered on your device.

PLAYS WITHOUT A CONNECTION

The chess engine runs inside the app rather than on a server, so games against
the computer and pass-and-play games work with no internet at all — on a plane,
underground, anywhere. Only online multiplayer needs a connection.

NO ACCOUNT, NO ADS, NO TRACKING

There is no sign-up and no profile. There are no purchases and no
analytics of any kind. The only thing that ever leaves your device is the
display name you choose for an online game, and the moves of that game.

Chess Diorama uses the Stockfish chess engine.
