This is the fourth of four New Testament stories about the life and death of Jesus Christ. John's Gospel is the only book of the four Gospels that is not included in the Synoptic Gospels (gospels with a common perspective).
Although it is written by John, 'Beloved Disciple of Jesus,' there is much debate about who the actual author is. The language and theology presumes that the author lived longer than John and wrote the Gospels based on John's teachings and testimony.
Moreover, the fact that several anecdotes in Jesus' life are described in a different order than the Synoptic Gospels, and the fact that the last chapter looks like a later addition, suggests that John's Gospel text may be a composite.
The place and date of writing is also uncertain.
Many scholars claim that this book was written in Ephesus, Asia Minor, about the centuries to convey Christianity truths to Christians living in the Hellenistic era.
