Flight Time Calculator for the Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina)
The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) is increasingly spreading in Europe. With this calculator, you can determine the flight time and resulting range of an observed hornet nest in seconds – completely offline on your device.
How does it work?
Measure the time a hornet needs to fly from the nest – from leaving to returning. Enter the location name, coordinates, date, and the measured time (minutes and seconds). The app automatically subtracts the time the insect spends in the nest (45 seconds) and calculates the one-way flight time and the resulting distances at two typical flight speeds (6 m/s and 6.5 m/s). The results serve as a basis for locating the nest.
Main Features
- Flight Time Calculation: Enter the measured time, automatically takes nest time into account, and calculates the one-way flight time.
- Distance calculation: Automatically calculates the two flight radii (circle radii) at 6 m/s and 6.5 m/s.
- Determine location: With the touch of a button, your current coordinates are captured via GPS.
- Satellite map: Display both circle radii directly on a satellite map. The nest is assumed to be the center point, and the circles indicate the likely flight area of the hornet.
- Direction line: Draw a line from the nest in the direction the hornet flew – including two lateral lines at an angle of ±7.5° to define the flight corridor.
- Compass function: Use the orientation of your device to determine the flight direction directly on the map.
- History: Save your measurements and filter the history by date, location name, or coordinates. Each measurement can be displayed again on the map at any time.
- PDF export: Export your measurement along with the map as a PDF file – ideal for documentation and sharing with experts.
- 100% offline & privacy-friendly: All data is stored exclusively locally on your device. No accounts are required, no cookies are used, and no tracking takes place.
Who is this app for?
This app is for beekeepers, conservationists, pest control professionals, and anyone who wants to actively contribute to the control and mapping of the Asian hornet. By systematically recording flight times and activity ranges, nests can be located more quickly and reported professionally.
Note:
The results are estimates based on your measurements and typical flight speeds of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina). They do not replace professional confirmation by an expert. Please report any nests you find to the relevant local authority.
