Karot: a little light for the people dear to you
A friend across town, the one you love, your family far away: press their face, and your light comes on in their phone. Nothing to type, nothing to answer.
Karot means longing: missing someone, with all the love inside that feeling. Whether they are on the other side of the world or just at work.
One press says “I’m thinking of you”
Their face is the button. A quiet notification tells them who thought of them, like “Mom just thought of you”. The light fades slowly over about four hours, and one look tells you how recently someone thought of you.
Your hour and theirs, on one screen
Each person has a page of their own, painted in the colours of their sky at that hour: it may be morning where you are and night where they are.
Leave them something small
Open the circle above their light and send a drawing in light, a few words, up to a minute of your voice, a photograph, or one of twelve signs. Whatever came while you were away waits there, each thing with its hour.
A letter for a day you choose
Write what you would tell them if you were there, or say it in your voice, up to three minutes. It arrives on the day you choose at nine in the morning, their time, and stays sealed until they open it.
Our book
Everything you leave each other gathers in your book: every month has its page, which you turn with your finger. On the back of each page is a calendar where the days you thought of each other light up, with no numbers and no counting who thought more.
A birthday card that comes alive
On their birthday, send a card with your words or your voice inside. When they open it, the card comes alive.
Karot on your home screen
Widgets keep your people in sight, with their face, their local time and their light. Press a face and your thought reaches them without even opening Karot.
Small things that matter
Quiet hours, birthdays, and a status, so your people know when you are asleep and when you are free to talk.
A new phone, the same people
Karot offers once to keep your people with your Google account, so a new phone brings you back to your Karot with the same people, your days and your letters.
Private, in plain words
No sign-up: just your name, a photo if you like, and your city from a list. No phone number, no password, no location access. Nobody is told that something you left was opened; only a letter’s writer learns when. Karot counts which screens are opened and what is done in them, such as a thought sent or a letter opened, but never what you write or who your people are, and you can switch that counting off. If you delete your account, your profile, connections, days and letters are deleted with it.
What Karot will never do
No chat. No feed. No “last seen”. No ads. No streaks, no scores. Missing someone isn’t a game.
What does Karot cost?
The heart of Karot is free for everyone you love, however many they are. On the free plan you can:
• choose a letter’s day within the next 30 days,
• send voice messages, drawings, photographs, notes and signs,
• send birthday cards, choosing from three,
• use the widgets,
• keep your people.
Karot Plus and Karot Family add the same things:
• “Open when…” letters, which wait sealed for their moment.
• “Until we meet”: set the day you will see each other, and watch it come closer together.
• “On this day”: what you left each other comes back on its day.
• “Their voices”: their voice messages, in one place.
• “Send to several”: anything you leave, for several of your people at once.
• Letters for the year ahead.
• Six more birthday cards.
• “Your year together”: a gentle look back at the days you thought of each other.
What someone with a plan makes for you, you receive and open free. Karot Plus is for one person; Karot Family is for you and up to five people you choose. They aren’t on sale yet.
