About this app

KernelAI brings private AI chat to your Android phone. Draft a message, rewrite a paragraph, ask questions about a document or explore an idea with models that run on your device.

Download a compatible model while you’re online. Once it’s ready, local AI chat works without internet, even in Airplane Mode. No account or subscription is required.

Write, learn and code
Get a first draft, summarize text, brainstorm ideas or ask for an explanation. Use a model suited to your task to generate, explain or review code.

Chat with your documents
Ask questions about PDFs, DOCX, CSV, Markdown and text files. Request a summary or find relevant passages using on-device document chat. PDFs need readable text; scanned pages are not supported.

Ask about images
Attach a photo, screenshot, chart or diagram and ask what it shows. Image understanding runs locally with a compatible vision model.

Choose your local models
Browse more than 50 model options from families such as Llama, Gemma, Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral and Phi. KernelAI checks compatibility and memory needs to help you find a model that fits your phone or tablet.

Already have a model? Import a compatible single-file GGUF chat model from Files or a URL. Model import is available in Preview. Local LLM performance, supported features and answer quality depend on your model and device.

Make it work your way
Set custom instructions and generation settings. View thinking output from supported reasoning models. Organize conversations in folders, search your history, branch a chat or export it as Markdown or JSON. Exports do not include attachments.

Use your voice
Dictate prompts with on-device voice input on supported devices and languages. Android 13 or later, a compatible speech recognizer and an installed language pack are required.

Optional web search
Need current information? Enable web search with your own Tavily or Exa API key and a compatible model. Search is off by default. It requires internet and sends search queries to your chosen provider; provider fees may apply.

Ten app languages
Use KernelAI in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese or Arabic. Choose your language during onboarding or change it in Settings. Arabic has a right-to-left interface.

Before you start
Internet is needed to download models. Available memory and model size affect speed and which models you can use. Local inference processes your chats and documents on your device. AI answers can be inaccurate, so check important information.

The features currently available in KernelAI for Android are free.
