About this app

Kernel is the first corn yield app to measure kernel size, not just count
kernels. Two photos, on your phone, no signal needed. Free.

Everyone counts kernels. But two ears with the same count can hold very different grain. Not knowing the size of the kernels can easily cause a 50 bushel error. We stop the guesswork by actually measuring kernel size.

HOW AN ESTIMATE WORKS
1. COUNT THE KERNELS — Photograph the whole ear. Kernel traces every row: kernels per row, rows per ear.
2. MEASURE THE SIZE — Snap the ear in half and photograph the cut face.
Kernels per bushel is measured, not assumed.
3. ESTIMATE YIELD — Bushels per acre at 15.5% moisture, on the spot. The
flow is faster than the hand count it replaces.

IT WORKS AT THE FIELD EDGE
Everything runs on the phone. Three bundled neural-network models ride
along in the app, photos and estimates are stored on the device, and the
whole flow works with no signal at all.

EVERY NUMBER IS EDITABLE
Kernel shows its work. Every measurement — kernels per row, rows, kernel
depth, kernels per bushel — can be corrected by hand, and the edits stick.
An estimate holds as many ears as you want to sample, reported as the
average of the per-ear yields.

EVERY EAR ON THE MAP
Estimates auto-save, are named by GPS location, and are pinned on a map —
searchable by field, hybrid, date, notes or location. Export selected
estimates to CSV. Deleted estimates are restorable for 30 days.

FREE, WITH OPTIONAL BACKUP
No subscription. No account needed to estimate. Sign in with Google,
Apple, or email only if you want your estimates backed up and restored to
a new phone. Not tied to any seed brand.

Built by Mark Gee of Gee LLC, who has worked in agriculture his whole
life: "So much of the yield story is told by kernel size, and we're the
first app to help farmers measure that."

An estimate is a sample, not a measurement of your harvest.

What’s new

Second release: corn yield estimates from two photos — kernel counting,
measured kernel size, multi-ear averaging, offline in the field.
