For everyone involved with children with autism
-Why don't you use the picture card of the app? ~

What kind of illness is autism?

Autism is not a illness that locks you into your shell because of something, and it has nothing to do with how you treat your parents or your childhood experience.

Autism is thought to be largely due to some problems with the development of the central nervous system in the womb before birth.

At this stage, the exact mechanism of disease onset is not yet known, and it is said that it may be the result of a complex combination of genetic negative factors, biological factors, and immunological factors.

What are the major characteristics of autism?

1. Difficult to interact with the surroundings

Children with autism are not very good at understanding their feelings.

In infancy, when parents approach, there are often signs that they do not show the pretense they want to be lifted, do not signal with their eyes, or do not laugh.

Also, while I'm not sure how important people are to me, such as my parents and family, I don't know much about them.

And when I reach the age of going to school, I sometimes don't understand the feelings of the other person.
It seems that it is often not possible to make friends smoothly.

2, delayed language development

It is easy to notice a considerable delay in language development, such as not speaking a word or starting to speak a word late.

Also, I am not very good at making up for lack of language skills with gestures and facial expressions.

In addition, it often makes no sense to say a word, or to use an uncommon wording, or to return the other person's words to the parrot.

3, limited interest and repeatability of movement

Interest tends to be limited to a particular subject, and one particular action tends to repeat, so to speak, ritually.

And if your behavioral patterns change, you may get a strong rejection.

For example, repetitive movements such as keeping the palms fluttering and building blocks in a certain pattern are often seen, and if the usual order of taking a bath after a meal is reversed, panic may occur. This is possible depending on the child's situation.

4 Visually superior

Children with autism have little understanding of what is said in words and can understand what they are shown. This feature is called visual dominance.

It is said that 10% of children with autism use auditory information and 90% use visual information to understand external information.

Children with autism are good at visual learning.

Children with autism who can speak are also visually superior.

Don't misunderstand that you understand my words just because your child follows your words.

For example ... Let's say you say, "Wash your hands and then have a snack."

Favorite words tend to remain in the head of a child with autism, and everything else disappears.

Perhaps the child will understand that he can eat a snack.

And if your child starts eating snacks right away, you may scold your child.

The child understood half of what he was told and acted, but he was scolded and unreasonable for him.

However, if you show the "hand wash" and "snack" picture cards side by side at the same time, your child will understand them correctly.

Make sure you understand what you have shown and instructed.

Picture cards are recommended for smooth communication with children with autism by repeating movements and taking advantage of their visually superior characteristics.

Until now, "picture cards" are like paper-based cards and playing cards, but the picture cards introduced this time are smartphone apps!

You can easily show what you want to convey with the picture card of the smartphone app, even when you are out and over again.

What are the three benefits of using a picture card?

・ You can reduce anxiety and fear by seeing
・ You can confirm what to do next
・ Children themselves can tell with picture cards

In addition to reducing anxiety and fear, there is also a communication method for children with autism who are not good at communicating by arranging picture cards of feelings of "what they want to eat" and "what they want to do" and teaching them by pointing.

Precautions when using picture cards

◇ When using a picture card, parents watch closely

It depends on the age and characteristics of the child, but when you want them to use a picture card, they tend to try to do it alone during busy hours.

Even if you are busy, first stop and watch what you want your child to do.

If the parents don't see it, the child won't know what to do, and if he can't flutter later, it will be an opportunity to think about the next step.

◇ If you can't do it well, call out

Parents will keep an eye on them and establish them so that they can perform one action.

Of course, sometimes it doesn't work and you don't know how to do it.

In such a case, let's not only show the card but also teach it while calling out.

Even children with autism who can't talk well can feel more at ease while having them talk to them rather than just showing them a picture card.

◇ Something that will always be complimented if something can be done

If you can do even one, I will definitely praise you.

Even if you can do it all the time, you may not be able to do it depending on your physical condition and mood of the day.
I have.

Children with disabilities take a lot of time to clear each one.

Instead of thinking "it's natural to be able to do it", I will give you confidence one by one by repeating "praise if you can".

If you make a mistake, you may not be able to do it depending on the physical condition and mood of the day for children with disabilities who do not force them to calm down.

Depending on the day, you may be frustrated and tantrum, and you may not be able to do it at all.

On such a day, it is best to give priority to calming down and let them do what they like.

While saying, "It's rare to be able to do it every day," it's better for parents to show the picture card repeatedly when they can, and to do nothing when they can't.

It will help children with autism and medical staff to communicate and treat as smoothly as possible by having them understand the flow of the examination with a picture card in advance when they visit the dental clinic. think.
