About this app

This children's story with audio was told to Martu teacher Janelle Booth by children from Jigalong.

It features both English Language and Martu Wangka readings of the story, plus colouring in images and extensive notes on the linguistic details on the Martu Wangka language.

Told by Janelle Booth, Jordan Clause, Reese Samson and Demas Sorenson.

Martu Wangka, or Wangkatjunga, is a variety of the Western Desert language that emerged during the 20th century in Western Australia as several indigenous communities shifted from their respective territories to form a single community. It is spoken in the vicinity of Christmas Creek and Fitzroy Crossing. The use of the name 'Wangkatjunga' to identify this variety only appears to have emerged in the 1970s

Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre aims to be recognised as a leading Aboriginal language and resource centre in Australia. By working with the old people of the PiIbara, we will use our expertise, knowledge and sensitivity to record and foster Aboriginal languages, culture and history. Thus the young people remain strong in retaining their Aboriginal language, culture and history ensuring cultural continuity.
