About this app
camdown is a private messenger. Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted on your phone, so nobody in between can read them - not your network, not your carrier, and not us.
YOU ARE A USERNAME, NOT A PHONE NUMBER
People reach you by your username. Turn on a private username and you disappear from search and from phone-number matching entirely; the only way in is an invitation link you hand out yourself, and you can withdraw it at any time.
FRIENDS BEFORE CALLS
Anyone who can reach you may send three messages. Reply and the conversation opens; accept their friend request and you can call each other. Nobody rings your phone before you have agreed to it.
MESSAGES
Text, photos and videos, replies, delivery and read receipts you can switch off, and deleting a message for everyone rather than only for yourself. Send a picture or a video as view once and each person can open it a single time. Photos are shrunk on your phone before they are encrypted, which also removes the location your camera records in every picture.
VOICE AND VIDEO CALLS
One-to-one calls that go directly between the two phones wherever the network allows. Turn a voice call into a video call mid-conversation, with the other person's agreement before any camera opens. Send a gift while you are talking - thirty-six of them, drawn and animated, and all of them free.
STATUS AND CAMFEED
Posts that disappear after 24 hours, with up to ten pictures or videos in one post, and view once if you want it opened a single time. You choose who sees each one: your friends, your contacts, or everyone on camdown. A post for friends or contacts is end-to-end encrypted, and every viewer gets their own copy of the key, so removing someone removes their access to what you already posted. A post you share with everyone is public: it is stored on our server in the clear, the way a profile picture is, because there is nobody to lock it for.
WHAT WE CANNOT DO
Our server stores encrypted bytes it has no key for and deletes them once they are delivered. It cannot read a message, a call, or a post you shared privately. It never sees your phone number in the clear.

An app lock behind your fingerprint, face or passcode. Screenshots of a conversation are blocked, and if a screen recording starts, the person you are talking to is told.
