Autumn, 1998. The Daeseong Cinema in Munjin is closing after its last screening the following Sunday.
Seo Jiwoo restores film for a living, and she has come to clear the place out. Her father, Seo Man-ho, worked as a projectionist here from 1979 to 1995 — a man she grew up believing had simply failed at everything. In a box of his things there is a film can that appears on no schedule the cinema ever printed. The label carries a name she has never heard.
WHAT YOU DO
You walk the building and put your hands on it. You bring a projector back to life, line up screening logs from fifteen years ago, and splice a broken reel by hand. Nobody explains the story to you. It comes out of the paperwork — the logs, the torn ticket stubs, the letters on the marquee board, and the film itself.
12 NOVEMBER 1983
Someone died in this cinema that night. The fire is what everyone remembers. As Jiwoo works out what was actually running on the projector, she learns what her father's silence protected, and what it left behind.
