Irregular English verbs in a pirate game. 162 verbs, each with three forms: infinitive, past simple, and past participle. You're a captain washed up on an island, and ahead lie seven islands and battles where only the correct form wins.
HOW DOES THE BATTLE GO?
The enemy calls out a verb, and you respond with the second or third form. Hit, and the cannon fires. Miss, and the ship takes a hole, and the boatswain tells you the rule. Before the battle, you choose how to play: choose a form from the options, write it down, or listen to the verb. Each method earns a star. If the ship sinks, the game displays the rule based on your own words, and "Once More" brings you back into the fight.
FIND PAIRS
In a battle by ear, you play the "Find Pairs" round: listen to "bring," "buy," and "think" and match them with "brought," "bought," and "thought." Collect all the pairs, and the cannons fire.
SEVEN ISLANDS
Bay of Idols, Misty Cliffs, Steps of Light, Crystal Mine, Iron Island, Crystal Peak, and Ancient Ruins. The islands range from common words like go, went, and gone to rare ones, and each island offers fewer clues. Each has its own boss.
STUDY: TABLE BY GROUPS
The table of irregular verbs is arranged here by rules, not alphabetically. Stubborn ones, for whom all three forms are the same (cut, cut, cut). Brotherhood -ought (bring, brought, brought). Ladder i-a-u (sing, sang, sung). The magic -n in the third form, "was d, became t," a vowel that gets shortened, and tricky ones, who have their own little rules: feed, fed, and dig, dug. Each verb has a translation, transcription, and pronunciation for all three forms.
TWO MINI-GAMES
"Hall Sorting": forms fall from the deck; scatter them among holds I, II, and III. "Boatswain's Drum": a parrot sets the rhythm, and you substitute the next form for each beat. Both mini-games practice the same words as the battle: it's a trainer for irregular verbs without any new rules.
LETTERS IN A BOTTLE
A parrot-boatswain writes home. Only he knows English on the island, and he knows it poorly: he slaps -ed onto every verb. He writes "goed," but in port they read "goed," hear "god," and send a calendar. Each letter has one such mistake, and the correct form is at the end.
COSTUMES, PETS, AND DOUBLOONS
Victories are paid in doubloons. The captain's costume changes as the voyage progresses, from Robinson to the Golden Sovereign, and the rare Scarlet Corsair can be purchased with doubloons earned in battles. A pet accompanies the captain: a cabin boy parrot, a monkey, a turtle, or a golden crab.
