Mahjong 4 Friends allows you to play mahjong with your friends and/or bots! American, Chinese, Hong Kong, and British Mahjong are supported. Can't play your way? Send us an email!

Mahjong 4 Friends provides instructions in a bubble near the right hand side of the screen while in a game. If you want to learn more about rules and strategies, a comprehensive tutorial is linked to from the app. Summaries of rules are provided below:

American Mahjong Rules (NMJL):
- One right, across, left charleston round (0-3 tiles left)
- If all 4 players agree, One left, across, right charleston round (0-3 tiles right)
- One charleston pass across (0-3 tiles)
- Mahjong when matching a combination on the card.
- Jokers can only be used in matches of 3 or more tiles.
- Any player can swap a matching tile for exposed jokers

Chinese/British/Hong Kong Rules
- 4 pongs/kongs and a pair are mahjong
- Sequences can be used to replace a pong/kong
- An optional charleston is provided
- Mahjong and sequence limitations can be overridden (to help you play by your rules!)

You can play with your friends on any American Mahjong card by selecting "Other Card" - scoring is supported on National Mahjongg League cards from 2020 to 2024, and Marvelous Mah Jongg cards from 2021 to 2024.

Playing a Game:
1. Open the App
2. Create a Game Room (if you want to play alone, hit "Single Player", and skip to step 5)
3. Have Friends join Game Room
4. Fill remaining spots (if any) with bots.
5. Configure your game settings (make sure to select either "Chinese", "American", or "Panama"!)
6. Start the Game!

Ratings and reviews

Would still be neat to get some kind of sound effect for when a meld is made. To alert the player if we don't see it go down. Would also be cool if their was an option to take the doubler off of flowers. I know it's a standard rule. But my family never liked that. Either way though. This app actually scores the melds and not just the 1 point hand style. Which is SUPER hard to find. So that alone makes me love this app.

Playing with my bot friends has increased my play speed and decision-making abilities. Besides the AI suggestions, I use the League card to pivot if necessary. I have played the last 4 weeks with humans who are very patient with beginners. My speed with the bots has dropped from 30 minutes per game to 15. Staying focused is the key. Really love this challenge.

I teach American and Chinese Mahjongg and I think this is a terrific way to practice and play. Tons of options with different cards and methods. It also gives suggestions for different hands which is incredibly helpful for those just learning. I've told my students about it and they love it. You can play by yourself against bots or create a room and invite friends. Highly recommended for those with at least a basic understanding of the game. And you can play offline if you're data conscious.
