HOW IT WORKS
Banjen plays recorded tones for the four strings of a banjo tuned D-G-B-D. You listen, you compare, you adjust. That is the whole app: four big buttons, four strings, nothing to configure and nothing to read.
Most tuners listen to your instrument through the phone microphone and show you a needle. Banjen works the other way around. It gives you the note and lets you decide when the two sounds match. That means it does not care how loud the room is, whether the phone has signal, or whether anyone else is playing at the same time.
STRING BY STRING
• String 1, the thinnest — D
• String 2 — B
• String 3 — G
• String 4, the thickest — D
Strings are counted from the thinnest to the thickest, which is the usual convention. Tap the button for the string you are working on and bring your instrument to that tone.
Come up to pitch slowly. Start a little flat and tighten gradually until the two sounds blend into one. Overshooting the note and yanking it back is how strings get broken, and no tuner of any kind can prevent that. Going slowly can.
WHEN A REFERENCE TONE BEATS A NEEDLE
At rehearsal, in a room full of people playing, a microphone tuner picks up everything except the string you care about. Banjen does not listen at all, so the noise is irrelevant.
On a bus, in a park, in a basement with no bars of signal, Banjen already has the sounds on your phone. Nothing downloads, nothing loads, nothing asks you to log in.

TUNING BY EAR
Matching a tone by ear is how players tuned long before clip-on tuners existed, and it is a skill that keeps improving the more you use it. Banjen gives you a steady reference and lets your ear do the rest.
Beginners often find it easier than reading a needle, because there is nothing to interpret. When a string is close but not right, you hear a slow wobble between the two sounds. As you tighten, the wobble slows down. When it disappears, you are in tune. That is the whole method, and after you have heard it a few times you stop having to think about it.
ALSO FOR THE CAVAQUINHO
The Brazilian 4 string banjo and the cavaquinho share the same tuning: D-G-B-D. If you play cavaquinho or cavaco, in samba, pagode or choro, the same four buttons work for your instrument with nothing to change.
WHAT BANJEN DOES NOT DO
Banjen is an ear-tuning tool, so it is worth being clear about the limits:
• It does not listen through the microphone and will not tell you how far off you are
• It is not a chromatic tuner and has no alternate tunings
• It plays D-G-B-D only. On a 5 string banjo in open G those are strings 1 to 4, and the 5th string drone is not included
• Standard tenor banjo (C-G-D-A) and Irish tenor (G-D-A-E) are different tunings and are not covered
